Getting to Coba

Coba sits inland, 47 km from Tulum along a straight jungle road. From Tulum it is an easy half day on your own. From Cancun it is a long day whichever way you go.

The ruins are at the edge of the village of Coba, on the shore of Lake Coba. There is no train station, no airport and no coast road nearby, so you arrive by road: on a tour, in a car, or on a colectivo or bus from Tulum.

Where you start decides most of it. Tulum is 45 minutes away, Playa del Carmen about an hour and a half, the Cancun hotel zone two hours or more.

The quick answer

From Tulum, take a colectivo (about 60 to 100 MXN each way, 45 minutes) or drive the free road in 45 minutes. From Playa del Carmen, drive about 1.5 hours or book a tour with pickup. From Cancun, allow at least 2 hours each way; a tour is easier than the bus. There is no Tren Maya station at Coba; the nearest is Tulum. Aim to arrive at 8:00, when the gates open.

How far is Coba from Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun?

Cancun to Coba is two hours on a good morning. Hotel pickups along the hotel zone, a stop for breakfast and Tulum on the way make it longer, which is why the Cancun tours start around 5:00.

Can you take a bus or colectivo from Tulum to Coba?

Yes. Colectivo vans leave from Tulum town near the ADO terminal for about 60 to 100 pesos each way, and a few second-class buses a day run the route.

The colectivos are white vans that leave when full, more often in the morning, and take about 45 minutes. They stop in Coba village, a short walk from the ruins entrance. Coming back, catch one on the main road through the village; the last departures leave in the late afternoon, so don't plan on staying past about 16:00 without a backup.

Second-class buses on ADO's Oriente line run Tulum to Coba a few times a day, taking about an hour. Timetables change with the season, so check on ado.com.mx or at the Tulum terminal the day before. From Playa del Carmen or Cancun, take an ADO bus to Tulum first and change.

Coba village is a short walk from the gate, so the bus and the colectivo both work.

Is it easy to drive to Coba?

Yes. From Tulum it is one straight two-lane road with no tolls, slowed by speed bumps in the villages. There is a car park at the entrance with a small fee.

Leave Tulum on the road signed for Coba at the main crossroads in town and follow it inland. The road is paved and quiet, with topes, Mexico's speed bumps, in each village you pass through. Drive in daylight: there are no lights and animals cross at night. Fill up in Tulum.

From Playa del Carmen or Cancun, take Highway 307 south to Tulum and turn inland there. Coba has a car park next to the entrance with a small fee in pesos. A car is the best way to add the cenotes, which are 6 to 10 km away, or the spider monkeys of Punta Laguna, about 20 km north of the Coba crossroads.

No car? The Coba and Punta Laguna day picks you up in Tulum at 8:00 and includes both Coba tickets.

Is there a Tren Maya station at Coba?

No. The Tren Maya runs along the coast past Tulum and inland via Valladolid; the nearest station to Coba is Tulum, 45 minutes away by road.

The Tren Maya stops at Tulum and at Valladolid, and Coba sits between the two lines with no station of its own. From Tulum station you still need a taxi, a colectivo or a rental car for the last 47 km. The train's money did reach Coba in another form: the new staircase on Nohoch Mul was paid for by the improvement programme for archaeological sites along the route. See climbing Nohoch Mul.

Is a Coba tour from Cancun worth it?

If you want the climb and the jungle, yes, but expect a 12-hour day with four or more hours on the road for 1.5 to 2.5 hours at Coba.

The Cancun days pair Coba with Tulum and a cenote, and the ones that give Coba the most time are worth the early start. The Tulum and Coba day meets in Cancun from 5:00, reaches Tulum at opening time and gives Coba two and a half hours. Guests know the deal: "long day starting at 515a and returning back around 6p. We'll worth it."

The private tour from Cancun costs more and lets you set the start, which pays off in heat and crowds. One guest from 2017 said the only drawback was "I did not know that I could have requested an earlier pick up time." Ask for 6:00.

What time should you arrive at Coba?

At 8:00, when the gates open. It is cooler, the staircase queue is short, and the first tour buses from Cancun are still on the road.

Coba is open every day from 8:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and the Nohoch Mul climb closes at 15:30. If you drive from Tulum, leave at about 7:15. If you arrive after noon, you will still get in, but the climb queue and the heat both peak in the middle of the day.

The private tours lean on this. A guest on the private cenotes tour wrote: "We are the first people of the day at Coba, no tourists only we!"

Where can you go after Coba?

The cave cenotes 6 to 10 km away, the spider monkeys of Punta Laguna about 20 km north, or Valladolid, about 50 minutes west.

Three easy add-ons. The cenotes Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha and Multun-Ha are a few minutes' drive away, at about 100 pesos each; see cenotes near Coba. Punta Laguna is a community-run reserve with spider and howler monkeys, a lagoon for canoeing and a zipline. Valladolid, a colonial town with a cenote in the middle, puts you within reach of Chichen Itza the next morning.

The Coba and Punta Laguna day does the first two in one go, with lunch at a Maya family's home.
