Coba's best weather and its biggest crowds arrive together. The rains end, the hurricane season closes on 30 November, and the Riviera Maya fills with people escaping winter.
This winter there is a new factor: the Nohoch Mul climb, reopened in December 2025, has a cap on the number of people on the stairs. Here is how to plan the 2026-27 season around the weather, the Mexican holidays and the queue.
The quick answer
The dry season runs from about December to April, with highs near 29 to 31 °C and few rainy days. The busiest weeks are 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 and the Easter school break, 22 March to 2 April 2027. Avoid Sundays (free entry for Mexicans), arrive at 8:00, and climb Nohoch Mul first.
What is the weather at Coba from December to April?
Warm and mostly dry: highs around 29 °C in December and January, rising to 31 °C in April, with mornings near 18 °C.
The table uses the long-term averages for Tulum from Mexico's national weather service (SMN, 1951 to 2010, via Wikipedia). Coba sits inland, 47 km from Tulum and away from the sea breeze, so the afternoons feel hotter under the canopy and on the open plazas.
The main spoiler is the norte, a cold front that brings cloud, wind and a day or two of showers. SMN forecasts 56 cold fronts for Mexico in the 2026-27 season, above the average of 50, with December the peak month at 9 (Grupo Animal). A wet day closes the Nohoch Mul stairs.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainy days | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | 29.4 °C | 18.2 °C | 7 | Pleasant, the odd norte |
| January | 29.3 °C | 17.8 °C | 7 | Coolest mornings |
| February | 29.8 °C | 18.2 °C | 5 | Our pick |
| March | 30.9 °C | 19.8 °C | 3 | Driest, Easter crowds |
| April | 31.4 °C | 21.1 °C | 3 | Hot by midday |
When are the busiest weeks at Coba in 2026-27?
The Mexican school holidays: 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, and the Easter break, 22 March to 2 April 2027. Long weekends in February and March are busy too.
Mexico's SEP published the 2026-27 school calendar on 15 July 2026 (Infobae). Mexican families travel in those weeks, on top of the North American and European winter crowd. Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, so Holy Thursday and Good Friday are 25 and 26 March.
The two holiday Mondays fixed by the federal labour law make long weekends: 1 February 2027 (Constitution Day) and 15 March 2027 (Benito Juárez's birthday). Expect more cars from Cancun and Mérida on the Saturday to Monday of each.
| Dates | What is on | Crowds at Coba |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 18 December 2026 | Early dry season | Moderate |
| 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 | School winter holidays, Christmas, New Year | Peak |
| 6 to 29 January 2027 | After the holidays | Quietest of the winter |
| 30 January to 1 February 2027 | Constitution Day long weekend | Busy |
| 13 to 15 March 2027 | Benito Juárez long weekend | Busy |
| 22 March to 2 April 2027 | Holy Week and Easter break | Peak |
| Rest of April 2027 | Heat builds | Moderate |
Why are Sundays busier at Coba?
Mexican nationals and residents enter INAH sites free on Sundays, so local families come in numbers. Pick a weekday.
The free Sunday rule survived the 2026 fee rise (Uno TV). It is a good policy and a lively day to visit. It is also the day the stairs queue longest.
A Sunday inside a holiday week is the worst combination of the winter. Tuesday to Thursday in January is the best. Prices and the two-ticket system are in our entrance fee guide.

Will there be a queue to climb Nohoch Mul this winter?
At peak times, yes. Visitors report a limit of about 15 people on the stairs and around 15 minutes at the top, and the big coaches from Cancun arrive together around midday.
The rules reported by The Cancun Sun in May 2026 are simple: climbing from 8:00 to 15:30, closed shoes, no climbing in rain or strong wind. The cap keeps the stairs safe. It also means a line forms when two or three groups reach the plaza at once.
Look at the order of the stops. The budget days from Cancun and Playa, such as the Tulum and Coba day, do Tulum first and reach Coba in the middle of the day. Tours that start at Coba get to the stairs before them. A norte has the opposite effect: after a wet morning, the stairs reopen to a crowd that has been waiting.
More on the climb itself in our Nohoch Mul climbing guide.
Coba first, by bike, before the coaches: a private day with a cenote and Tulum by boat.
Check dates for the Coba by bike, Tulum by boat tourWhat time should I arrive at Coba in winter?
At 8:00, when the gate opens. Go straight to Nohoch Mul, climb, then see the other groups on the way back.
The site opens from 8:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00, and the climb closes at 15:30. In the first hour the paths are shaded and cool, the bikes are all there, and the stairs are close to empty. By 11:00 the coaches are in and the plazas are in full sun.
From Tulum, that means leaving at about 7:15. From Playa del Carmen, about 6:30. From Cancun, a 2-hour drive makes a self-drive 8:00 start hard, which is why the Chichen Itza and Coba day meets in Cancun at 4:50 to put you at Coba early.
| Arrival | What you get | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 to 9:00 | Shade, short or no queue, cool air | Best |
| 9:00 to 11:00 | Small groups arrive, still comfortable | Good |
| 11:00 to 14:00 | Coaches, heat, the longest queue | Avoid |
| 14:00 to 15:30 | Crowds thin, last climbs | Fine, watch the 15:30 cut-off |
Which Coba tours beat the winter crowds?
Tours that put Coba first: the Coba and Punta Laguna day from Tulum, the bike and boat tour from Playa, and the private tours. Book holiday weeks early.
The Coba and Punta Laguna day starts in Tulum with Coba as the first stop and two hours on a bike. The bike and boat tour is private from Playa del Carmen, also Coba first, then cenotes and Tulum from the water. Small groups of 10 or a private van fill up first in the Christmas and Easter weeks, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means an early booking costs you nothing if a norte rolls in.

Coba by bike before the coaches, a swim in Tamcach-Ha and Choo-Ha, then a boat along Tulum's coast with snorkel gear. Private, fees included.
